William W. Cheney is a partner in Freeman Mathis & Gary’s Cherry Hill office. He concentrates his practice on defending construction and design, professional liability, commercial, products liability, and large property loss claims.  Mr. Cheney has represented clients in all aspects of pre-suit investigations and civil litigation, developing effective strategies and approaches that have resulted in numerous favorable outcomes in state and federal trial and appellate courts, as well as in arbitration and mediation settings.

Mr. Cheney’s construction and design practice includes representing developers, owners, general contractors, sub-contractors, architects, engineers, material suppliers and manufacturers, and other entities and professionals in a variety of construction and design defect, product liability, Consumer Fraud Act, misrepresentation, New Home Warranty and Builders' Registration Act, Contractors’ Registration Act, and tort claims.  In this area, he has successfully litigated high exposure, multi-party actions involving condominium complexes, luxury homes, schools, auditoriums, warehouses, roads, swimming pools, high-rise apartment buildings, and parking garages.

In his professional liability practice, Mr. Cheney has defended a wide array of other professionals in error and omissions claims, including attorneys, accountants, insurance agents, and real estate agents.

In addition, Mr. Cheney has extensive experience representing clients in commercial and directors and officers claims. He has litigated all types of contract and business disputes, including fraud, breach of duty, Uniform Commercial Code, unfair trade practices, restrictive covenant, trade secret, Computer Related Offenses Act, confidential business information, and intellectual property claims. He has secured a number of early dismissals based upon dispositive motions seeking enforcement and interpretation of disputed contract provisions.

Mr. Cheney also has defended an array of product liability, negligence and premises liability claims.  His experience includes defending claims of significant property loss stemming from fires, explosions, water leaks, truck accidents, and machinery failures, and catastrophic personal injuries, such as traumatic brain injury, complex regional pain syndrome (reflex sympathetic dystrophy), paraplegia and quadriplegia.

Prior to becoming a lawyer, Mr. Cheney obtained a degree in Computer Information Systems and worked as a software developer and database administrator for several years.  His technology background uniquely equips him to defend clients in actions involving computer and data privacy related claims and those requiring extensive electronic investigations and eDiscovery.

Mr. Cheney is admitted to practice in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. He served as a judicial extern for the Honorable Marie E. Lihotz, Superior Court of New Jersey, Appellate Division, and clerked for the Honorable Terrence R. Cook, Superior Court of New Jersey, Burlington County.
