Overview

Steven H. Malitz is a Partner and Office Chair in Freeman Mathis & Gary, LLP's Hartford office and is Co-Chair of the firm's Northeast Tort practice team. He focuses his litigation and trial practice in the areas of trucking and transportation, retail practice liability and products liability. This includes expertise with modes of commercial transportation such as student, city and commercial busing and livery vehicles. Mr. Malitz currently serves as regional counsel for a large national bus company. In the retail area, Mr. Malitz has defended a wide range of premises liability cases for national retailers ranging from fall down matters to falling merchandise cases and assault and battery cases. He has represented and tried numerous cases for national self insured trucking companies as well as trucking and transportation insurers in both state and federal court. Mr. Malitz has extensive experience in representing his trucking and retail clients in major accident litigation in which, when appropriate, he has worked closely with nationally renowned experts in fields such as accident investigation, accident reconstruction, human factors, safety, warnings and biomechanical engineering. Mr. Malitz has also represented his clients in cases involving owner-operators, cargo claims, criminal charges, coverage issues, breach of contract, commercial disputes, employment matters, products liability issues, hauling of hazardous materials, weight violations and workers’ compensation.

Mr. Malitz has successfully tried numerous catastrophic injury cases on behalf of his clients in both state and federal court. He has litigated and tried products liability and retail liability cases for a wide range of national product manufacturers and retail companies. He has also defended and litigated numerous general aviation cases for aircraft manufacturers and fixed base operators. Steven has tried over thirty cases to verdict. He is also a frequent speaker at national trucking and transportation conferences and meetings around the country.

Mr. Malitz has successfully completed the Practical Transportation Training Institute for Litigation Attorneys conducted at the MayFlower Transit Training Center for Drivers. This included both practical experience driving a tractor-trailer as well as twenty hours of instruction over two and one half days, covering both motor carriers and their drivers’ operations.
