Zachary Smith is a Partner of the firm’s CGL and Business Liability National Practice Section. He also is a member of the firm’s transportation law, premises liability and general liability practice teams. 

Prior to joining Freeman Mathis & Gary, Zach spent two decades as a senior trial attorney for one of the nation’s largest insurance companies and specialized in high-exposure litigation involving personal injury, construction defect, property line disputes, HOA disputes, landlord tenant, landslides and breach of contract.

Mr. Smith also defends a wide range of professionals in a variety of legal disputes, including disputes involving real estate brokers, lawyers and insurance agents. His practice also includes representation of individuals and entities in defense of claims arising out of miscellaneous professional liability policies. He has the skills and experience to assist health care professionals and health care administrators in litigation defense and prevention in state and federal venues, and conflict resolution between providers and management.

Mr. Smith has tried more than 35 jury trials as lead counsel.

Mr. Smith earned a Martindale-Hubbell rating of AV Preeminent and is a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA). When he was inducted into ABOTA in 2010 he was the youngest member of the San Francisco chapter of ABOTA. He was named the 2018 Distinguished Defense Attorney by the San Francisco Trial Lawyers Association.

Mr. Smith earned his law degree from the University of Michigan in 1997 and his undergraduate degree from University of California, Berkeley.

Mr. Smith lives in Oakland with his wife, son and two golden-retrievers. In addition to the practice of law, he enjoys restoring his classic car, travel, and keeping up with the latest in consumer technology.
