Overview

Alexia Roney is Senior Counsel at Freeman Mathis & Gary, LLP and is located in the Atlanta office. She is a member of the Data Security, Privacy & Technology, Government Law and Insurance Coverage practice sections. She specializes in insurance coverage, governmental liability and constitutional law.

Ms. Roney combines an expansive background in science, medicine and information technology with superb communication skills to unpack complicated legal and technological issues for a layman audience. Before entering law school, Ms. Roney served as a laboratory technician in the Department of Neurology at the University of Virginia and then worked with early internet service provider America Online (now AOL, Inc.) at its height.

In 1999, Ms. Roney attended the James E. Rogers School of Law at the University of Arizona, where she graduated magna cum laude in 2002. She subsequently moved to Atlanta, Georgia to serve as a judicial law clerk in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia. She earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia.

Representative Cases & Clients

  • In Georgia, a recent defense verdict a constitutional law case against a nurse and her employer in a correctional case in the Northern District of Georgia. Ms. Roney drafted an early motion to dismiss which successfully dismissed all claims against one defendant and substantially narrowed the claims against the remaining defendants.
  • In Georgia, Ms. Roney successfully defended the Georgia State Bar in two consecutive suits filed by an attorney on the issues of defamation and interference with business practices. The first, Ms. Roney resolved the suit on a motion to dismiss. In the second, Ms. Roney resolved the suit on a motion for summary judgment.
  • In Michigan, Ms. Roney drafted an appeal to the Court of Appeals which reversed the judgment of a trial court to order surgery and established precedent which precludes prisoners from raising claims as third-party beneficiaries to a contract under that state law.
