Overview

Robert Bender is Senior Counsel in Freeman Mathis & Gary’s Philadelphia office.  Bert is a member of the firm’s Data Security, Privacy, & Technology group and counsels clients on state and federal privacy and security regulations.  He advises clients on the legal implications of their data before, during, and after a privacy or security event.  Bert has guided businesses, non-profits, and government and municipal entities of all sizes through hundreds of suspected and confirmed privacy and security events.  He assists clients with investigating reported events, understanding statutory or contractual obligations, and satisfying those obligations – including by public notification and regulatory reporting, when necessary.  Bert represents clients in response to government investigations from state and federal regulatory agencies arising from privacy and security events.  Bert also counsels clients on implementing policies, procedures, and processes for managing and protecting their data and for responding to suspected misuse of data.  He has experience litigating complex matters in both state and federal court.

Bert received his Bachelor’s degree (History) from the United States Naval Academy.  He subsequently served five years in the Marine Corps and often relies on the insights and experiences he gained as a Communications Officer to guide his clients through privacy and security events.  Bert received his Juris Doctorate from Temple University’s Beasley School of Law, where he was recognized by the faculty at graduation for outstanding contributions to the law school community.  He is active in several community and fraternal organizations.
