Allen Sattler  is a partner with Freeman Mathis & Gary in the Orange County and Los Angeles offices.   He defends commercial contract and technology claims on a national basis. He is vice-chair of the firm’s Data Security, Privacy, and Cyber Liability practice team. 

Mr. Sattler’s practice centers on commercial litigation with a particular focus on technology issues involving data breach or privacy violations. He regularly advises and defends companies concerning their obligations pursuant to breach notification laws, privacy laws and regulatory investigations. He also defends a variety of technology E&O claims.  He has handled numerous cases resulting from data security and privacy liability events, including individual and class action suits for network intrusions, employee data theft, cyber extortion including ransomware, multimedia liability. His commercial practice additionally includes copyright and trademark infringement, technology services liability and TCPA class action suits.

Mr. Sattler also defends technology and other employers in employee claims involving intellectual property, executive compensation and pay suits, discrimination and harassment. 

His practice also includes representing foreign and domestic insurers and reinsurers on several different lines of business, including directors and officers, management and professional liability, cyber liability and commercial general liability. He defends insurers in pre-suit coverage disputes and declaratory judgment actions with regard to environmental liability claims, including some of the nation’s largest EPA Superfund Sites, professional liability claims including in particular lawyers E&O and employment practices claims, false advertising and antitrust claims, and cyber/Tech E&O claims.  Mr. Sattler also defends reinsurers against claims resulting from cedents’ underlying liabilities in asbestos, environmental, products, workers’ compensation, and bodily injury matters.  He has litigated and arbitrated several reinsurance disputes to conclusion, mostly through the network and procedures set forth in ARIAS.

Mr. Sattler attended Syracuse University where he earned undergraduate degrees in Information Management and Technology and in History, graduating with honor.  He earned his law degree from Saint Louis University School of Law (J.D., cum laude, top 10% of his class), where he was an editor for the Public Law Review.

While earning his law degree, Mr. Sattler worked as a judicial intern for U.S. District Judge Michael Mihm for the Central District of Illinois and for Judge Roy Richter with the Missouri Court of Appeals.

Prior to joining Freeman Mathis & Gary and moving to Southern California, Mr. Sattler was a partner at a law firm in New York City.  He performed a secondment with a syndicate in Lloyd’s of London, where he worked closely with underwriters, claims personnel and in-house counsel.

Mr. Sattler regularly attends industry conferences by NetDiligence, Advisen, ARIAS and the Reinsurance Association of America, among others.  He has delivered presentations and moderated panel discussions concerning data security and privacy liabilities in New York and London.
