Richard J. Bortnick is a partner in Freeman Mathis & Gary’s San Diego office. Mr. Bortnick provides U.S. and international clients with sound, prudent and cost-effective representation and advice on cyber and technology risks, exposures and insurance as well as professional liability, D&O, and commercial matters that could be financially devastating to his clients’ bottom lines. Richard is well known throughout the insurance and commercial sectors for skillfully guiding his clients on pre- and post-cyber incident best practices and breach response management as well as their regulatory compliance obligations, and frequently advocates on their behalves with federal and state regulators across the country. His clients include corporate officers and directors as well as public entity administrators concerned about their companies’ and constituents’ privacy and security processes and protocols.

A frequent speaker and author on cyber-risk and privacy topics, Advisen named Mr. Bortnick as its Cyber Risk Network 2015 Person of the Year.

Mr. Bortnick currently serves on the Corporate Board of the Franklin Institute Science Museum in Philadelphia, and has served on the Boards of various other not-for-profit and municipal entities since graduating law school in 1985.

Mr. Bortnick is a summa cum laude graduate of Boston University and earned his law degree cum laude from Villanova University School of Law.

When not serving clients, providing thought leadership on myriad matters of law and ethics, or taking part in philanthropic and charitable endeavors, Mr. Bortnick enjoys reading and cheering on the Philadelphia Eagles and his law school alma mater’s basketball Wildcats.
