Joseph J. De Hope is of counsel in Freeman Mathis & Gary's San Francisco office. Mr. De Hope has tried several cases to verdict involving personal injury, products liability, governmental liability and punitive damages. He has arbitrated cases to award including legal malpractice, uninsured motorist and personal injuries. He has also handled over 500 special investigation claims for insurers and has arbitrated or mediated over 300 cases as counsel for a party and more than 200 cases as a mediator or arbitrator. In addition, Mr. De Hope has handled numerous appellate cases, arguing approximately 10 cases before various appellate courts.

Mr. De Hope's coverage practice includes providing coverage opinions relating to personal and commercial lines of insurance including automobile claims (uninsured motorist, underinsured motorist, no fault, theft, vandalism and third party), homeowners claims (first and third party), Special Investigation claims (“SIU”), commercial general liability (“CGL”) (property and casualty, domestic and international), aviation, professional liability, employment (“EPLI”), directors and officers (“D&O”), and life and disability matters. He also has extensive experience in drafting automobile, attorneys and accountants’ insurance policies and endorsements relating to casualty, property, professional and directors and officers liability coverage.

Mr. De Hope's professional liability practice includes defending attorneys, accountants, dentists, insurance agents, real estate agents, mortgage loan brokers, appraisers, architects and professional engineers.

Earlier in his career, Mr. De Hope defended cases involving general aviation, general aviation maintenance, personal injury, product liability, governmental liability, sexual harassment and the defense of section 1983 cases in federal court.

In his personal life, he is the proud father of three and grandfather of three. Additionally, he plays trumpet in the Contra Costa Wind Symphony and leads an 18-piece big band (swing music) called It's About Time.
