Overview

Luisa Taddeo is Senior Counsel in Freeman Mathis & Gary, LLP’s Seattle office. She is a member of the Insurance Coverage & Extra-Contractual Liability and Tort & Catastrophic Loss Practice Sections. She is also a member of the Firm’s Transportation, Property Insurance Coverage and Homeowners Associations (HOA) Teams. She focuses her representation on defending insurers in all facets of insurance litigation, including first- and third-party claims, UM/UIM claims, as well as claims involving professional liability and D&O coverage. She has also advised insurers on issues related to the duty to defend and the duty to indemnify, including defending insurers in litigation involving allegations of bad faith and other extra-contractual claims, contribution actions, and declaratory judgment suits.. She has also represented clients in various commercial litigation disputes, disputes involving HOAs/COAs, including direct representation such as non-profit corporations and their directors and officers in breach of contract, breach of fiduciary duty, discrimination, and business tort matters. She has extensive experience handling matters on appeal, successfully briefing and arguing HOA-related disputes, and successfully representing large companies in complex civil appeals in the Washington Court of Appeals and Washington Supreme Court.

 

Ms. Taddeo represents insurers, corporate clients, and insurer-defended companies and individuals across a multitude of industries all over the country, regarding complex legal and coverage issues. She frequently advises senior executives and in-house legal teams on risk management strategies to minimize potential litigation exposure, advises on high-stakes dispute resolution, and guides clients through complex legal problems. She also acts as an arbitrator for King County Superior Court’s Civil Arbitration department, presiding over civil litigation matters involving UM/UIM claims, personal injury, insurance disputes, breach of contract and commercial litigation. Additionally, she speaks French and Italian, which she has used in the past to help facilitate the translation of foreign court documents.

 

Ms. Taddeo is a member of the Washington Bar Association, where she serves on the Character and Fitness Board, and Board of Bar Examiners. She is also a volunteer and pro bono partner for the Washington Innocence Project, which fights for innocent people, providing free legal and investigative services to those who have been wrongfully convicted. Additionally, she is also involved with her sons’ non-profit preschool, serving as Board President and supporting the school’s strategic planning, oversight compliance, and fundraising efforts.

Representative Cases & Clients

  • Member of trial team that obtained eight-figure judgment on environmental defense contribution claims on behalf of targeted insurer following first multi-week all-remote civil bench trial in Oregon state court.
  • Obtained five-figure discovery sanctions against corporation in contentious breach of contract case involving dispute over ownership interest of corporation.
  • Arbitrated over civil litigation matters involving UM/UIM claims, personal injury, insurance disputes, breach of contract, and commercial litigation matters, for King County Superior Court Civil Arbitration Division.
  • Successfully argued appeal regarding breach of contract in Court of Appeals, such that summary judgment at trial court level in favor of insurer-defended client was affirmed.
  • Successfully prepared oppositions to several petitions for review to the Supreme Court of Washington, terminating review and dismissing claims in favor of insurer clients.
  • Successfully prepared and argued various Motions for Discretionary Review for workplace injury litigation, including successful defense of several Motions for Reconsideration of the same regarding respondeat superior issues; subsequently won appeal on same case at the Court of Appeals level, achieving dismissal in favor of insurer-defended client.
  • Part of small case team that achieved unprecedented recovery of several billion dollars on behalf of Madoff’s customers and victims serving as court-appointed counsel to the Securities Investor Protection Act (SIPA)Trustee for the liquidation of Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities LLC.
