Overview

Amy Frantz is a Partner and Office Co-Chair of Freeman Mathis & Gary, LLP's Chicago office. She also serves as a Vice-Chair of the firm's Insurance Coverage & Extra-Contractual Liability national practice section. She is Vice-Chair of the firm's Midwest Coverage practice team. She practices in the areas of insurance coverage and civil litigation. She advises and represents insurers in a variety of third-party and first-party insurance coverage matters arising under commercial general liability policies, professional liability, auto, property and umbrella policies. She assists clients throughout the life of their claims, including evaluating coverage and risk transfer issues, preparing coverage analyses, drafting reservation of rights and coverage position letters, and pursuing declaratory judgment actions.

Ms. Frantz also defends clients in a variety of civil litigation matters, including construction accidents and defects, premises liability, and transportation negligence, in state and federal jurisdictions throughout Illinois. She handles all phases of litigation and has tried multiple cases to verdict. She has also represented clients in appeals. She currently serves as the Insurance Law Committee Chair for the Illinois Defense Counsel.

In addition to Ms. Frantz's practice, she presents on emerging legal issues and developments in insurance coverage and tort litigation. She is also a member of the Federation of Defense and Corporate Counsel and currently serves as the Insurance Law Committee Chair for the Illinois Defense Counsel.

Representative Cases & Clients

  • Successfully argued and obtained judgment for insurer in more than 20 declaratory judgment actions brought by policyholders, which involved first-impression insurance coverage disputes related to claims for COVID-19 related business interruption coverage and assisted in successfully defending judgments on appeal. Appellate courts affirmed judgments in insurer’s favor in all cases that were appealed.
  • In addition, Amy assisted in representing insurer in a Multi District Litigation related to COVID-19 business interruption coverage disputes, successfully obtaining summary judgment on behalf of insurer in all cases.
  • Represented insurer in first-impression insurance coverage disputes related to underlying claims and lawsuits involving claimed violations of Illinois’ Biometric Information Privacy Act.
  • Obtained summary judgment on behalf of father/owner of vehicle son was driving when son struck and killed a bicyclist, on claims of agency, negligent entrustment, and negligent maintenance of vehicle.
  • Obtained summary judgment on behalf of a homeowner in Cook County for a slip and fall in her driveway. Successfully handled subsequent appeal. Appellate court affirmed summary judgment in homeowner’s favor.

  • Second Place, Lincoln Award Legal Writing Contest, Illinois State Bar Association, 2020. Article: “What’s So Special about Special Interrogatories?” The article was published in the May 2020 issue of the Illinois Bar Journal and discusses the significant amendments to the Illinois statute governing special interrogatories and provides practical tips for attorneys on the use of special interrogatories at trial.
